Could it be that a few dozen brave young Israelis are actually holding on to thousands of acres of the Land of Israel to prevent a land grab by Arabs? Could it be that the key to their success is nothing more than herding sheep, day in and day out, across barren mountains in Samaria?
Sounds too good to be true. But that is exactly what is going on now across the hills of the ancient tribe of Benjamin, right in the lower mountains of Samaria that overlook the Jordan Valley. All of this is taking place a mere 20-25 minutes away from Jerusalem.
No more than a few dozen young idealists, some of whom are married and living in subhuman conditions, are stubbornly holding on to the Land of Israel. They endure freezing cold winters and scorching summers. But they don’t give up, no matter what obstacles are placed in their way. This is all going on while the Israeli government wangles with the Supreme Court over who has rights to these ancient Lands.
In broad daylight, with massive funding from the EU, Arab Bedouin have been grazing their flocks all over these hills in order to set up facts on the ground for a legal battle against any Jewish settlement of these Lands. Nobody was doing anything about this, until this group decided to fight back.
Now, the Arabs have met their match. It is not the Israel Defense Forces or the Israeli government. It is a small bunch of stubborn-as-nails idealists who take their sheep out every day, no matter what the weather, and literally chase away the Bedouin or any would-be land grabbers. Despite an occasional scuffle, most of the time, it is actually rather peaceful – just scorching hot weather to deal with. This group has won the respect of the Arabs through their persistence.
They have succeeded in setting up flocks of sheep on more than ten mountain tops with a limited amount of sheep. In each mountain top, they are generally herding 30-50 sheep. But if they had 150-200 sheep on each mountain, they could claim double or triple the amount of Land – without much added effort.
Plain and simple – they have set up the infrastructure. But they need more sheep to grab more Land.
