With President Donald Trump openly discussing the option of launching an unprecedented military strike against Iran and Israeli defense leaders convening emergency security consultations, the region appears to be entering another period of heightened uncertainty.
On Thursday, Defense Minister Israel Katz convened a high-level security assessment with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and Israel’s top military leadership to review operational readiness amid growing concerns that Iran could launch another direct attack against Israel.
Participating in the meeting were Defense Ministry Director General Maj. Gen. (res.) Amir Baram, the commander of the Israeli Air Force, the head of the Operations Directorate, the head of the Intelligence Directorate, the head of the Planning and Force Build-Up Directorate, the commander of the Home Front Command, and other senior defense officials. The broad representation underscored that Israel is preparing not merely for localized incidents but for the possibility of a regional escalation involving multiple fronts.
Opening the consultation, Katz delivered an unmistakable warning to Tehran.
“We are preparing for every possibility. If Iran attacks Israel, it will suffer a crushing blow.”
His remarks reflect Israel’s long-standing doctrine of overwhelming retaliation against any direct Iranian aggression while maintaining a high level of defensive readiness.
Trump: “We Are All Set”
At the same time, President Donald Trump dramatically raised the stakes during an interview with Axios, revealing that he is actively weighing what he described as an unprecedented military operation against Iran.
“I am considering a massive attack. Bigger than ever before. I am close to making a decision. We are all set for it,” Trump said.
The president acknowledged that such a decision would carry enormous geopolitical consequences but emphasized that no final order has yet been given.
Trump also addressed Israel’s role in any future operation.
“Israel would join within two minutes if I asked,” he said, before adding that the United States “doesn’t need anyone” to carry out military action against Iran.
The comments reinforce Trump’s repeated warnings that Iran cannot be allowed to rebuild its military capabilities or resume its pursuit of nuclear weapons following previous rounds of U.S. and Israeli strikes.
Could Iran Strike First?
Adding to the growing tension are assessments from Western intelligence services suggesting that Iran may choose to launch the first blow rather than wait for a U.S. or Israeli offensive.
Iran has previously demonstrated its willingness to directly target Israel with large-scale missile and drone barrages. While many of those attacks were intercepted through the combined efforts of Israeli, American, and allied regional air defense systems, they marked a significant shift from Iran’s traditional reliance on proxy organizations such as Hezbollah and Hamas.
Israeli defense planners are now evaluating the possibility that Tehran could once again attempt to overwhelm Israeli air defenses using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and attack drones in an effort to deter a future American strike.
The Home Front Command’s participation in Thursday’s security meeting highlights the importance Israeli officials place on civilian preparedness should such a scenario unfold.
Weekend Strike?
Speculation has also intensified inside Israel regarding the timing of any potential military action.
Likud MK Moshe Saada told Channel 14 that current assessments point toward a possible strike in the coming days.
“We all know that we’re approaching a strike on Iran—perhaps even this weekend. Those are the current assessments.”
Although no official decision has been announced, public comments from both American and Israeli leaders suggest military planning has reached an advanced stage.
Deterrence or Escalation?
Whether Trump’s public warnings are intended primarily as strategic deterrence or represent genuine preparation for military action remains unclear. Publicly signaling readiness to strike can place enormous pressure on Tehran while also providing one final opportunity for diplomacy.
At the same time, history has shown that periods of heightened rhetoric between Washington, Jerusalem, and Tehran can rapidly evolve into military confrontation through miscalculation or deliberate escalation.
For Israel, the priority remains clear: maintaining maximum military readiness while preparing both its armed forces and civilian population for any scenario. Should Iran choose to attack first, Israeli leaders have made it unmistakably clear that the response would be swift, overwhelming, and coordinated with its allies if necessary.
With President Trump declaring that the United States is “all set” for a potential operation and Israeli defense officials preparing for every possibility, the coming days could prove decisive for the future security landscape of the Middle East.
