Former Ambassador to Israel Friedman and Israeli Minister Ron Dermer are arguably two of the people who were intricatedly involved in setting up the Abraham Accords, a complete game- changer in the Middle East that transformed so many of the accepted givens in Arab-Israeli diplomacy.
Nobody imagined that Israel would be able to sign such comprehensive economic agreements with Arab countries that would upend the norms of Arab countries not wanting to deal with Israel. The accords proved conclusively that the claims of Arabs inside of Israel to have their own State are not at all what concerns all or most Arabs in neighboring countries.
An Arab in Bahrain is more concerned with the threat of Iranian domination, the hopes of upward economic mobility, and a peaceful future than he is with supporting the claims of Arabs in Israel to have their own State within a State.
The big question is whether there will be a Stage 2 of the Abraham Accords with Saudi Arabia and other countries. If there will be, that will completely mark a sea-change in the Middle East. The moderate Arab countries will have basically won and will have an upper hand in terms of moving forward and becoming more allied with the Western world and values of freedom, while the countries that choose to stick with the values of terror will be left behind.
