Katz Unveils New Nahal Positions in Gaza

Israel is taking another significant step toward reshaping the security reality in Gaza. During a visit to the northern part of the Strip, Defense Minister Israel Katz announced plans to establish three new Nahal outposts, reinforcing Israel’s growing military presence in territory that was once a major Hamas stronghold.

The announcement reflects Israel’s determination to ensure that Hamas can never again rebuild the military infrastructure that enabled the October 7 massacre. Rather than relying solely on periodic military operations, the new outposts are intended to provide a permanent security presence capable of disrupting terrorist activity before it can threaten Israeli communities.

The Nahal concept has deep roots in Israel’s history. Originally combining military service with pioneering settlement, Nahal units helped secure strategic frontier regions while laying the foundations for future civilian communities. Although today’s security environment is different, the establishment of Nahal outposts carries a similar strategic message: Israel intends to maintain lasting control over key security areas necessary to defend its borders.

According to the IDF, Israeli forces now control approximately 65 percent of the Gaza Strip, giving the military unprecedented operational freedom to locate and destroy remaining Hamas infrastructure. Military officials also estimate that roughly 70,000 Hamas terrorists have been eliminated, captured, or otherwise neutralized since the beginning of the war, dramatically reducing the organization’s operational capabilities.

Despite these achievements, Israeli leaders have repeatedly stressed that the mission is not yet complete. Hamas continues to operate through underground tunnels, isolated terrorist cells, and remaining command networks. Establishing permanent military positions allows the IDF to maintain constant pressure while preventing the terrorist organization from reestablishing its presence in cleared areas.

For Israel, the objective extends beyond winning today’s battles. It is about creating a fundamentally different security reality—one in which Israeli citizens living near Gaza can return to their homes without the constant fear of another large-scale terrorist invasion. The new Nahal outposts represent another step toward that long-term goal, signaling that Israel intends to secure its southern border through sustained military presence, deterrence, and operational freedom rather than temporary ceasefires alone.
