The IDF found a Hamas terror tunnel on the Gaza/Israel border and destroyed it by pouring concrete into it. This is the fifth Gaza terror tunnel found in the past few weeks.

The tunnel came under Israeli territory close to the Israeli community of Nahal Oz. Had the tunnel gone undetected, a fatal Hamas terror attack could have been carried out.

The Longest Terror Tunnel

The tunnel is located near an area where Arab demonstrations have been taking place in recent weeks. Evidently, the “peaceful” Gaza march protests were actually a cover for terror activity that was taking place above and below ground.

According to the IDF, the full length of the tunnel is many kilometers.  Military intelligence estimates that it is part of a wider network of tunnels in the area. The IDF has already uncovered five terror tunnels recently – all in the Gaza Strip.

Israel’s Tech Solution for Detecting & Destroying Tunnels

As part of the effort to locate and thwart terror tunnels in the Gaza Strip, the IDF established a unique technological laboratory which has a specific purpose of detecting and locating tunnels.

The Gaza Division, under the command of Captain B, created the laboratory two years ago. Captain B is an electrical engineer and a chemist by training.   He works with some of the best minds in a variety of technological and research positions. Physicists, engineers, intelligence personnel and geologists from the Technology and Logistics Branch work with him.

It takes technological, intelligence, and operational efforts, to working together, in order to locate and thwart terror tunnels. The laboratory itself is the technological branch of tunnel detection.  They use innovative ground research such as scanning cavities and their dynamics.  The key is to find the tunnels as early as possible.  They always strive to develop new discovery and mapping techniques.  But, coordination with other parts of the IDF is critical to success.  The laboratory personnel work closely with the intelligence personnel, engineering forces, and other units in the field – until the tunnel is located. Then the IDF destroys it.
