Why Are Jihadists Still Making A Comeback In Gaza City?

The IDF announced that it wrapped up its two-week-long operation in Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighborhood. During the operation combat engineers demolished eight major tunnels and killed more than 150 gunmen.

In the past day, two tunnels were destroyed in Shejaiya, bringing the total amid the operation to eight, according to the IDF. The 98th Division found weapons, laptops, and other military equipment used by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives in the tunnels.

The Shejaiya operation came as a surprise to many since it has been assumed that Gaza City was already conquered. Unfortunately, since the pause in fighting during the first set of hostage releases, Hamas was able to go underground and attempt to out wait the IDF forces.

This failed calculus of the IDF upper echelon that Hamas had been squarely defeated in Northern Gaza has cost Israel in time, manpower and the needless death of IDF soldiers. Hezbollah has been able to extend its attacks on Israel as long as the IDF is stuck cleaning out areas it already assumed were cleaned out.

The current operation in Shejaiya may be “finished” for now, but if the IDF doesn’t focus on setting up a permanent presence in Gaza, Hamas will continue to grow back and pose a strategic danger to Israel. Gaza must be brought to its knees and fast, or Israel will continue to lose more and more land in the North to Hezbollah’s constant bombing.
