In the early evening the IDF carried out a number strikes in the vicinity of the European Hospital in Khan Yunis. The IDF later confirmed that it used a series of bunker busters to take out a Hamas command bunker under the European Hospital. The target was Muhammad Sinwar, the current leader of Hamas and the brother of the Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind of October 7th.
Following the killing of Hamas’s top military commander, Muhammed Deif, Muhammed Sinwar took charge of the terror group’s military wing. Later, after his older brother was killed by IDF troops, he became the de facto leader of the terror group in the Gaza Strip. Israeli officials have described Muhammed Sinwar as stubborn with regards to negotiations with the terror group for the release of hostages.
While there was no confirmation that Sinwar was in fact in the command bunker, the IDF and Shabak believe he was. According to Military correspondent Doron Kadosh, the IDF used similar tactics as they did with Hassan Nasrallah. The Air Force used dozens of munitions, including bunker-penetrating bombs, collapsing the tunnel system below and ensuring no escape routes remained - essentially suffocating anyone inside the bunker. The IAF also killed anyone attempting to rescue terrorists stranded in the bunker rubble.
One important revelation that is not longer surprising is the fact that once again Hamas uses hospitals as headquarters in contravention of the Geneva Convention.
