Throughout the IDF’s incursion into southern Lebanon, UNIFIL has often times refused to remove itself from battlefield areas. This has made IDF soldiers’ tasks even more complicated when seeking to destroy Hezbollah installations – especially when Hezbollah terror soldiers have been seen using UNIFIL lookouts and bases against IDF troops.
WATCH the IDF find weapons in Hezbollah base near UNIFIL location:
UNIFIL was established in 1978 in reaction to the PLO’s invasion of Lebanon. It’s mandate was expanded in 1982 when Israel invaded Lebanon to destroy the PLO who had begun to use the territory it took in Lebanon to shell Israeli communities. Since the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict, UNIFIL’s mandate expanded to “making sure” Hezbollah would not move south of the Litani.
Not only has Hezbollah been moving south of the Litani River over the past few years, breaking UN Resolution 1701, but it has been building secret bases, tunnels, and since October 8th 2023 it has fired more than 11 thousand rockets, UAVs, and ATGMs at Israel, forcing more than 60,000 Israelis from their homes.
In the last few days, the IDF uncovered a Hezbollah training facility positioned just 200 meters from a UNIFIL base. In this base they discovered Hezbollah documents and textbooks, maps of Israel, guides of IDF vehicles, as well as tunnel shafts and weapons at the site. Soldiers found rocket launchers ready to fire. The IDF’s latest discovery of another Hezbollah base near the UNIFIL installation in the area is just one of many examples since the beginning of the war, detailing the collusion between the international “peacekeeping” force and Hezbollah terrorists, much the same way as UNRWA has partnered with Hamas.
UNIFIL’s partnership with Hezbollah and active presence in an area where it is only aiding Israel’s enemy makes UNIFIL an active enemy of Israel. UNIFIL’s failure to enforce 1701 has made it necessary for Israel to fight the current ground war the IDF now finds itself in. Like Israel’s targeting of UNRWA in Gaza and elsewhere, Israel must make it clear that any UNIFIL presence south of the Litani Rivier will be regarded as a hostile enemy force and be eliminated. When the smoke clears from this war, it must only be Israel and local non-Shiite militias in control of southern Lebanon. If not, then Israel will be forced to fight war after war every few years.
