Why would France Prime Minister Macron decide to place an embargo on Israel in the middle of a massive Arab onslaught against Israel? Does Macron not understand how critical Israel’s need for arms is today? Of course, he understands this. The answer is probably connected to internal politics in France. Without a deep understanding of French politics, it stands to reason that just as in America, the leaders of other countries in the free world are also driven first and foremost by their goal to stay in power, even if it means other countries needing to pay the price – even with the lives of tens of thousands of people at stake.
President Macron now joins an embarrassingly long list of leaders of the free world who have chosen to place their own political futures above clear moral thinking. The internal political challenges that all democratically elected leaders face should never be minimized. However, there is plenty of room for maneuvering in the area of foreign policy for foreign leaders that would allow them to still stand up against the forces of evil, even if their electorate is filled with their supporters.
There have been very few leaders in the last 100 years who have made choices first and foremost based on a moral compass that was clearly attuned to the right channels. Harry S. Truman was one example of this. Some place Ronald Reagan in this category too. Perhaps Margaret Thatcher too. But the overwhelming number of leaders seem to decide first and foremost based on what is politically expedient.
In this powerful exclamation by Prime Minister Netanyahu, he stands proudly up to the moral obtuseness of the French leader and points the way forward for all of the leadership of the State of Israel and the free world. In the end, the truth stands on firm ground, while the lies and political reasons leading Macron to align France with barbarians will stand as a moral stain on the French leader’s political record.
