How important was religion to the founders of the United States of America?

George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and other founding fathers all believed that religion was the source of all morality in our society.

Separation of Church and State

Separation of church and state does not mean that religion is not important. It simply means that the State should not be run by the clergy. However, the State needs to receive its inspiration and moral compass from religion.
Thomas Jefferson declared in the Declaration of Independence, “All men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” God, the Creator exists.  This given is very important.

Joshua Charles, author of Liberty’s Secrets, explains that true liberty means that we have morals and boundaries. The only true source of morals that are eternal go back to Judeo-Christian values.

Why were those the key religious value system that built up the United States. Because that is what the founding fathers were familiar with. However, any religious system with checks and balances is better than no religious moral compass.

20th Century Wars

During, the 20th century, more countries battled other countries and more people killed other people than in any other century.

The 2 most horrible dictators who steered their country into battle and death were Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.  Both largely did not believe in any religions.  No religious red-lines existed in their world views.  It is much easier to argue that they both were clearly anti-religious.  They exerted much of their effort into defeating and eradicating all connections to religion of their own populations.

President Trump and others argue that if more people had guns, then less people would have been killed in the Holocaust.  This is undoubtedly true.  However, it is much more important to note that if genuine religious red-lines existed for more people, then perhaps the Holocaust would not have happened at all.
