Putin Begins Leveling Ukraine’s Second Largest City

Russian forces have begun mass shelling and missile strikes on Ukraine’s second largest city of Kharkiv in Eastern Ukraine. With the city now completely surrounded by Russian forces, the 1,433,886 residents are literally trapped inside.

Kharkiv is a major industrial hub for Ukraine and its proximity to the Russian border makes it an obvious target for Russia’s invasion forces. Kharkiv is essential to Russia’s aim of controlling the Donbass.

Western media has reported on what appeared to be a slowing Russian advance into Kharkiv, but this was erroneous, as most of the Russian troops that arrived there, only pulled out in order to await the larger invasion force. Now that this large force has arrived, the invasion of Kharkiv has begun.

Videos are showing fierce shelling of Kharkiv as well as active use of cluster bombs and missiles. Many of the hits are in civilian centers. The Russian offensive is by any standard gruesome and chilling and has echoes of Russia’s crushing of the war in Chechen between 1999-2000, which continued as a Guerrilla war until 2009.

Reports are also streaming in that Russia’s invasion force is now in the process of encircling Kiev, Ukraine’s capital. While the Russian army faced tough resistance, slowing down its advance, it appears to have regained the momentum and is swinging into action.

Although the West is standing united against Putin’s actions, there is little they can do unless NATO wants to risk sparking a nuclear war and without direct intervention, it is only a matter of time before Putin crushes Ukraine’s resistance.

In a world where the victor determines the narrative, Putin’s Russia is set to break apart Ukraine and push back on NATO’s constantly expanding alliance. If anyone assumes that the only responsible party in the current war is Vladimir Putin, they are mistaken. There have been clear warnings to NATO by Russia experts for years that uncontrolled NATO expansion will eventually spark a war with Russia.
