New York City has seen an uptick of antisemitism the past few weeks. An Orthodox Jewish man was attacked in his Jewish neighborhood while walking home from prayer services last Saturday afternoon. This is only one of a growing number of antisemitic attacks in the city.

The Attack

Mr. Moskowitz is a 52-year-old father of nine. While walking home from prayer services he said “good afternoon” to a man who was smoking a cigar on a street corner.  “As soon as [I greeted] him, he began yelling at me ‘you fake Jews, who are you saying hello to? You’re fake Jews and you stole all my money and robbed me, and stole my mortgage and my house. I want to kill you!’”

“I turned around and I see that he’s right behind me and he jumped me. And then he said ‘I hate Jews,’ Moskowitz told CBS late Sunday. “He put me in a headlock and I’m trying to maneuver out of him. In the meantime, I’m screaming ‘Help! Help!’ He says, ‘You don’t need help. I’m going to kill you right here.’

Moskowitz sustained a cracked rib along with a black eye, swelling, bruising and scratches over his body.

“There’s fear. There’s a lot of fear. The thing we know is that, unfortunately, there are people out there who want to kill us for one reason — because we are Jews,” his wife, Channah Moskowitz, was quoted by CBS as saying.

New York City Police arrested a man Friday on charges that he attacked Mr. Moskowitz.

They charged him with strangulation, assault and unlawful possession of marijuana for his attack on Mr. Moskowitz.

This is the second attack against Jewish men in the neighborhood within a week.

Growth in Number of Antisemitic Attacks

In addition to these attacks, Jewish businesses in New York City have become targets of antisemitic attacks as well. Just recently, seven businesses were sent a flyer marked with a swastika that  contained other menacing messages.

One swastika labeled flyer was sent to the Weiss Bakery in the Jewish neighborhood of Borough Park.  It read: “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!! JUDEN RAUS (jews out). N*****S AND F*****S MUST BURN IN HELL. CHRISTIAN IDENTITY IS BACK.”

The largest Jewish population of any city in the world, outside of Israel, is in New York City. Life for Jews in New York has been relatively safe. It is sad and frightening to see this uptick in antisemitism in New York City.
