President Donald Trump announced yesterday that good news regarding the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel may be coming soon. The reason for this as reports suggest is the agreement by Netanyahu to pull troops from the Morag corridor as demanded by Hamas.
This change in stance did not come without the Trump administration pressuring Israel to concede. The challenge for the Prime Minister and the government is that this section of Gaza was not only vital for the IDF to control, but it was supposed to be the location of the humanitarian city Israel was going to build for prescreened Gazans. More importantly though it was a large section of Gaza that was completely cleared of Hamas and was meant to be the staging ground for the Abu Shabab clan in hopes he could create a Hamas free area and push out from there.
If the ceasefire goes through, Abu Shabab still has free reign. After all, the ceasefire does not limit him, only the IDF. If Abu Shabab with Israel’s logistical support can move fast to take that area before Hamas can move back in, then it won’t matter. If he declares it Hamas free, he can then invite whoever he wants to help back his control.
Perhaps this is the real reason why Prime Minister Netanyahu feels it is time to take a pause. Hamas may be weakened just enough for the Gaza clans who have been pushed to the side to regain control of the Gaza Strip and begin the day after.
While this is not optimal, it maybe the only thing possible with a Trump administration hyper focused on forcing Israel into a ceasefire.
