WhatsappIsrael’s Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, delivered one of the clearest statements yet regarding Israel’s military strategy in southern Lebanon, emphasizing that the IDF is prepared to expand operations if necessary and will not relinquish territory until Israel’s long-term security is assured.
Speaking during a visit to Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon, Zamir said the military remains ready for any change in the security situation and is prepared for a wide range of operational scenarios.
“We are prepared for any change in the situation and ready for a broad range of scenarios,” he declared.
According to Zamir, the areas currently under Israeli control were not captured for symbolic reasons but because they served as critical Hezbollah staging grounds used to threaten and attack Israeli communities in the Galilee for years.
“We have seized territory in Lebanon and are clearing it of terrorist infrastructure,” he explained. “These are areas from which the Hezbollah terrorist organization prepared, threatened, and carried out attacks against Israel’s northern communities.”
The Chief of Staff made clear that Israel’s military campaign remains dynamic and could expand if Hezbollah continues to pose a threat.
“If necessary, we will deepen our operations and reach additional areas,” he warned.
His comments reflect Israel’s evolving security doctrine following the October 7 Hamas massacre and the prolonged conflict with Hezbollah along the northern border. Rather than relying solely on deterrence or international guarantees, the IDF is increasingly focused on establishing forward defensive positions inside enemy territory to prevent future attacks before they can reach Israeli civilians.
Zamir described this as a clear and deliberate security concept.
“We operate according to a clear security doctrine,” he said. “We are positioned in forward defensive zones deep inside enemy territory on every front from which there is a direct threat to Israel’s communities and citizens.”
Perhaps the most significant message came at the end of his remarks.
“The IDF is responsible for Israel’s security,” Zamir stated. “We will not withdraw from the territories we have captured until long-term security is guaranteed.”
The statement reinforces Israel’s determination to maintain operational freedom against Hezbollah and signals that any future withdrawal from southern Lebanon will depend not on diplomatic timelines, but on lasting security realities on the ground.
