Gaza Attacks Israel As Months Of Quiet End

The months of quiet on Israel’s southern border appeared to be too good to be true. Gazan Islamists launched a rocket at Israel for the first time in 40 days.

While the rocket did no damage, the IAF immediately retaliated as well as IDF tanks along the border. The attack occurred during rising tensions over Israel’s move towards applying sovereignty in Judea and Samaria.

This in a sense was Hamas’ message that no unilateral action will happen quietly. Israel must expect both a diplomatic push against it as well as a potential dangerous escalation.

This is perhaps one of the reasons why Prime Minister Netanyahu appears ready to find ways to drastically alter the plan. There will be far less uproar if he merely applies Israeli law within Settlement lines rather than extend sovereignty.

As the date draws closer the Prime Minister must make serious decisions that will impact Israel and the region.
