Why Does Israel Care About Turkmenistan?

While everyone is making a big deal about normalization between Saudi Arabia and Iran, Israel continues to notch up growing connections with non-arab Islamic countries.

Israel’s Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen landed in Turkmenistan in what may be a very crucial visit.

Little known Turkmenistan is a former Soviet state, across from Azerbaijan on the East side of the Caspian Sea. Home to a very large Muslim population that is anything but radical, it has long been seen as a natural trading partner and ally of the Jewish State. Like Azerbaijan, it is no friend of Iran and borders it from the North.

Its leadership sees Israel in helping it fend off Iranian influence from the South. In return, Israel can hope to gain another foothold in encircling the Iranian regime.

Eli Cohen’s visit comes at a critical time in order to show that Iran may have broken Saudi Arabia’s spirit, but it may not be able to hold off the coming Israeli onslaught from the South in UAE to it North in Azerbaijan and now Turkmenistan.
