The Jewish New Year is called Rosh Hashana. There is a commandment to blow a ram’s horn on the holiday. This year, Mark Zuckerberg decided to join!

Jewish Holidays

Jewish holidays are filled with unique customs and commandments. On Passover, the Jewish people cannot eat any bread – including bread products. On Sukkot, the Jews sit and eat outside in a tent-like structure and show their trust in God. Festive foods fill the tables of each holiday in order to honor the day. The list of customs and commandments goes on. And on the Jewish New Year, there are even more exciting customs!

Indeed, because the holidays are infused with prayers, customs, and commandments, we come that much closer to God.

Jewish New Year

The Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashana, is a special and holy day. It is a day to acknowledge and crown God as King over the universe.

On Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, there is a special commandment to blow the shofar – a ram’s horn. There are many reasons why. One is to awaken the soul to return to God. Our souls yearn to be close to God, and the shofar helps remind us of that. Another reason is that it connects us to our forefathers – when Abraham sacrificed a ram in place of his son Isaac.

Sometimes, unexpected stars decide to join in the holiday and blow the shofar too!

Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg co-founded Facebook. Facebook is the largest and most popular social media site.

This year, Zuckerberg joined in the festivities and blew the shofar. Certainly, someone as famous as him partaking in the holiday is going to spread all over the internet!

It is interesting to see how many people feel connected to the different Jewish holidays and to God.

Hopefully one day soon, everyone will feel connected to and believe in God!
