U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen met Public Security and Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan.  Erdan is Homeland Security Nielsen’s Israeli counterpart.  This was the first meeting ever hosted by an American Cabinet member at the new US Embassy in Jerusalem.

Nielsen was in Israel for the opening of the International Homeland and Public Security Ministerial Forum, where she delivered a major speech.

Twenty ministers and vice ministers from 17 different countries participated in the conference.  They focused on counter-terrorism and radicalization.

Collective Defense

One very important point that she emphasized is that the countries need to work together.  This is critical in today’s day and age.  She explained that “if we prepare individually, we will fail collectively.”  This is a complicated aspect in the fight against terrorism.  First, terrorists need to be fought outside of the country’s borders.  But, then, countries need to fight to keep the terrorists out of their borders.
