At a World Economic Forum event back in 2022, Melissa Fleming, the Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications at the UN, admitted that the World Health Organization “Owns the Science” on climate change. Since they “own the science”, they try to control what the public will see as credible information by partnering with Google and Big tech companies.
“We own the science” is one of the most anti-scientific statements that can ever be made.
I googled “what is science?” and I came upon this pretty simple definition on a website called sciencecouncil.org
While I’m not a scientist, I did spend many years learning science. As the definition above states, science is a pursuit of knowledge. Hypotheses are always tested in science. One year scientists tell us that eggs are healthy, the next year scientists tell us that eggs are unhealthy. I don’t have a problem with the scientists. Since science is about constantly pursuing via questioning and testiing, sometimes previously held undestandings change. And that is ok.
But, nobody can own the science. Science is always about the pursuit of knowledge, with the understanding that hypotheses can previously held conclusions can change.
It is scary that we are living in a time when a global organization believes that it “owns the science” and is acting to ensure that only its understanding of “the science” gets seen by the public as the reputable information.
