When Miss Israel Came to the Lubavitcher Rebbe
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, was one of the greatest Rabbis in modern times. He inspired people from all across the religious spectrum – from Ultra-Orthodox to completely unaffiliated. There was something about him that captivated everyone. He was a unique individual. And it seems that even the 1991 Miss Israel knew that.
She came to him to get a bracha – or a blessing. That was common amongst many. Some came to speak to him about personal or communal matters, some came to receive a blessing, some came to just catch a glimpse of his greatness.
It is not a common site to have Miss Israel going to such a great rabbi. The fact that she valued going to him is incredible.
And his response to her is priceless. Judaism does value beauty – but in a different way than the rest of the world. And that is something so special about Judaism. Judaism values real beauty. The beauty that follows G-d’s ways. And Judaism values using the beauty of a woman to serve G-d in His commandments.
All Jewish women should internalize the message of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and realize that they can use their beauty for spirituality and to serve G-d. Judaism does not suppress or negate physicality. G-d only asks of us to elevate it. To use it for the good.
