Horrific Antisemitic Parade in the Belgian city of Aalst

What a disgrace! Once again, the Belgian city of Aalst had a disgusting, blatently antisemitic parade! Just last year Aslo lost its UNESCO honors specifically because it refused to stop perpetuating negative stereotypes of Jews at its annual parade!

The displays and costumes were despicable. Some people dressed up as insects, yet with distinct features of some traditional Jews, the fur hats. Only a small percentage of Jews wear those hats, but it is a Jewish symbol to many.

As seen in the video, the parade also desecrated a major Jewish symbol, the Western Wall of the Temple Mount. They had a float of the Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall, with the message: “Well, you would also complain if they’d cut your penis”, referring to the Jewish tradition of circumcising baby boys.

A Belgian city representative defended this horrific antisemitic parade as “just fun”. But that is unacceptable. It is also very scary to know that pushing blatant antisemitic messages is fun. These visuals make an impact upon those who see them. While they enjoy laughing at making fun of Jews, plenty of people are learning to make hating Jews just part of their human nature. That is an extremely sad anecdote for the city of Aalst. That is how Hitler begun to engineer the hatred of Jews in Germany.

Not only did Jewish groups condemn the parade, but even Belgian Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès condemned it. That is a welcome piece of news.

The Aalst mayor’s spokesman told the BBC “it’s our humour… just fun”.

Peter Van den Bossche said “there isn’t a movement behind it” and “we don’t wish harm to anyone”.

“It’s our parade, our humour, people can do whatever they want,” he said. “It’s a weekend of freedom of speech.”

Aalst lies 31km (19 miles) northwest of Brussels – the heart of the EU – and is run by the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), a nationalist party pushing for Flanders independence.
