Hundreds of Druze dignitaries and leaders from Syria visited Israel, including the tomb of the Biblical Yitro in the Galilee for the first time 50 years.
This visit is more than just a simple ceremonial moment in time. Israel has already laid down defacto sovereignty over the Druze of the Bashan region that borders the Golan Heights and has also been sending in supplies to the 300,000 Druze of Sweida or Jabal Al Druze.
Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz has warned the Jihadists of Damascus that Israel views the Druze of Southern Syria as under Israel’s protection and will defend them at any cost. The fact is, the Druze are incredible fighters and only need air cover and supplies and can in a sense declare themselves and autonomous region.
The Druze in Sweida under the leadership of Hikmat Al-Hajri have rejected the authority of Jolani’s HTS. More than 800 Druze have already signed up to the new militia and thousands more are expected. With Druze in the IDF willing to assist their brothers in Sweida and Israel’s supplies already reaching the Jabal Al Druze area, there is a high chance that Sweida/Jabal Al Druze will become an autonomous region in federation with Israel.
This move will block the southward movement of the Jihadis to the Syrian and Jordanian border and give Israel territory to the east a third of the way to the Euphrates, while protecting the Jewish people’s closest ally in the region.
