Tensions continue to rise between Russia and Israel as the latest Israeli strike on Syria last Thursday brought heavy condemnation from Russia.

Standing next to Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters that “we strongly condemned the dangerous practice of Israeli strikes on Syrian territory.”

“We demand that Israel respect the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and, above all, respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria,” he said, according to Reuters.

Russian-Israeli relations have continued to sour as it became clear that Israel was not intending to take Russia’s side or even remain neutral in the latter’s invasion of Ukraine.

Putin has increasingly attempted to ward off attempts by Israel to attack Iranian positions in Syria. However, despite some success in stopping Israeli airstrikes, most have been successful.
