Shiite Iran and Sunni Saudi Arabia have dug their proverbial heels into the ground. This is nothing new as both Shiite Islam and Sunni Islam have been at war with one anther since the generation after Mohammed’s death.

Of course, the present confrontation is far less an open conflict and rather closer to a cold war, with each side moving their pieces around and preparing to outlast the other.

The real challenge is to know just how far each side will go to shore up their support. Yet, in a region where each side needs as much support as possible, Israel is increasingly looking for an option to help defend the Sunni Arab states from the expansionist Iranians.
