The decision-makers among the Democrats are not in any rush to replace Joe Biden for 2024. The longer Biden stays in office, the less scrutiny there will be on whomever takes over the mantle into the 2024 election. Biden making a laughingstock out of himself is good for the future of the Democrat Party. The problem is that the world does not just stand by while America has a a leader at the helm that does not belong in any elected office.
Joe Biden’t tenure whll probably lead to a law that will necessitate strict testing before allowing an official to be accepted as a candidate for elected office. There have been elderly statesmen who clearly are able to function at high levels. But Joe Biden is not the first elected official to be unable to properly carry out his tasks due to his state.
Dianne Feinstein, Strom Thurmond, and others have similarly been unable to carry out their duties, but stayed in elected office too long. The interesting question would be a young, yet unhealthy candidate, like FDR in 1944. FDR was just 61 years old during that election, but he was a sick and dying man. He had his faculties, seemingly, but he was clearly a man in faltering health. But he was an extremely popular President who was rightfully seen as the leader of the free world. He won easily, and then passed away shortly after.
One can say that the American electorate should be the judge. After all, Biden did indeed handle himself pretty well in the debates versus Donald Trump in the 2020 election. Many expected Biden to fall apart on that stage. But he just said “Come -on” any time he got flustered and ducked the tough spots. But today’s situation is truly problematic. The rules of the game need to change. But it will be tough to determine what the new rules should be.
