Can a child’s bedroom or a school libary with pictures of Mickey Mouse actually have a terror tunnel sitting right underneath it? In Gaza, the answer is yes. And this is not an exceptional case – it is the norm. An entire culture has adopted one issue as the central aspect of their existence – destruction of the State of Israel. This is so foreign for the Western mind to comprehend, but it is the reality in Israel.
Israel knew full well that it was facing a network of terror tunnels that were built under Gaza. But the extent of the tunnels was far greater than nearly anybody expected. There were tunnels that were large enough for cars and even trucks to transport weapons through. There were tunnels that were large enough to house entire factories to build and launch missiles from. And there were a seemingly endless number of small tunnels that were built in order for people to crisscross Gaza and wreak havoc on any attempt to destroy the Hamas terror network. It has been nearly a year since the war began, and Israel is still finding more and more terror tunnels.
What the world will soon find out is that Lebanon’s underground terrain has a similar situation as Gaza. But Hizbullah has a larger arsenal of weapons and missiles aimed at Israel. Either Israel will destroy the terror network sitting on it’s Northern border, or the entire North of Israel will continue to be 90% empty. Israel really has no choice. But Hizbullah does. They can cry “uncle” and scream for a ceasefire from Day 2 or Day 3 of an Israeli military response that is long overdue. Israel will probably agree to stop only after establishing a 5-10 mile deep zone that Israeli Defense Forces will stay in. That will probably take a few weeks for Israel to clear out terrorists and destroy the tunnels.
But both Israel and the Hizbullah do not want a prolonged war in the North. So, this war will probably be fierce, but shorter than the War in Gaza. No sovereign country could agree to a neighboring country stockpiling missiles and aiming them at it’s main population centers. America took the Soviet Union to the brink of World War III during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Cuba is further from Florida than Gaza is to Ashkelon. Cuba is further from Washington than Gaza is to Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv. Every reasonable person in Israel knows that Israel simply has no choice.
