Did Israel Kill Hamas No. 2 Mohammed Deif?

Israel announced last night that after it dropped a 2,000 pound bomb on a gathering of terror leaders in Khan Yunis that Hamas number 2 may have been eliminated in the attack that also killed 90 other terrorists including Deif’s deputy Rafa’a Salameh.

Despite Hamas’ insistence that Deif is fine, they admitted Salameh and the others were eliminated. Deif is more than icon for Hamas. He is considered the head of Hamas’ military wing and the actual planner of the October 7th manner. By eliminating Deif and Salameh, Israel sends a message to Hamas fighters and others that the days of the military wing of Hamas are numbered.

Even if Deif somehow survived the attack (very unlikely if he was actually there) Prime Minister Netanyahu was correct last night when he said that there are now cracks in the Hamas leadership. These cracks are the beginning of the end for the group.

Protestors against Netanyahu’s government would do well to understand that a majority of Israel stands behind a tough stance against Hamas - the public wants to finish them off and understand that the only way to get the hostages back is to continue to press onward until victory.

One of the results of Deif’s possible elimination is the breaking off of hostage negotiations. Netanyahu understands that the only way to win is not to agree to a ceasefire agreement, but rather the complete elimination of Hamas’ military infrastructure. The group is now in the throws of collapse and while there is work to do, its overall organization is imploding. Cut off from its Egyptian patrons, Hamas is drying up – its only a matter of time.
