In all fairness, things were very different back then. It is not rare for young Congressmen to be rather uninformed concerning the Middle East. Joe Biden is not the one to blame for the disastrous first few days of the Yom Kippur War. The 1 million man Army of soldiers from Syria and Egypt indeed overran most of Israel’s defenses on their borders.
But miraculously, Israel’s brave soldiers, many of whom were killed, blunted the advance, and then turned back the Armies of Egypt and Syria. It was actually an enormous victory. But the thousands of Israeli soldiers that were killed clearly was the result of a smug Israeli leadership that was caught up in a mindset problem. Plain and simple, they thought that the Arabs were so roundly defeated in 1967, that they would never have the gall to attack for another decade.
Joe Biden, Henry Kissinger, and other American leaders were not helpful. But the real problem was Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan, and some leaders of Military Intelligence. Let’s hope Israel has learned it’s lessons.
