By now everyone has heard of Trump’s declaration on Truth Social where he calls for Netanyahu’s trial to be cancelled.
Trump said the following:
“Witch hunt. He deserves much better than this, and so does the State of Israel.” “Bibi Netanyahu’s trial should be canceled, immediately, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero.”
While the antisemitic wing of MAGA claims this is proof that America is fully controlled by Netanyahu and “the evil Zionist entity.” Something else altogether may be afoot.
Strangely enough former Chief Justice Aharon Barak who is not fan of the Prime Minister, now claims he is in favor of a deal to close down the trials against Netanyahu. “I’m in favor of an agreement with Netanyahu. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a pardon or a plea bargain. The most important thing is that we come to an agreement. It can bring about calm,” Barak told the Mekor Rishon newspaper. “I don’t know why it doesn’t happen. If it were up to me, I would make an effort to come to an agreement,” he added.
What is going?
Yisrael Hayom published today what they say is the contents of a leaked phone call between Trump, Rubio, Netanyahu, and Dermer shortly after the US strikes on Iran’s nuclear installations. The main points and takeaways from the phone call according to Yisrael HaYom are the following:
End Gaza War Within 2 Weeks:
•Egypt, UAE, and others would take over Gaza governance
•Hamas leaders exiled
•All hostages released
Voluntary Gaza Emigration:
•Several countries would accept Gazans who choose to emigrate
Expand Abraham Accords:
•Push for normalization with Syria, Saudi Arabia, and others
Two-State Framework:
•Israel shows openness to two states, tied to PA reforms
US Recognizes Partial Israeli Sovereignty in Judea and Samaria:
•U.S. would back Israeli sovereignty in parts of Judea and Samaria
While Netanyahu has yet to address the alleged leaked content from the phone call, he did post a video saying the following:
“The victory opens the door to dramatically expand the peace accords. We’re working on it with urgency.
Alongside defeating Hamas and freeing our hostages, this is a window of opportunity we cannot afford to miss — not even for a single day.”
So how does Trump’s comment about the US saving Bibi jive with the supposed regional peace initiative outlined in the phone call?
There are no coincidences. Trump went from cursing when talking about Israel to claiming he wants to save Bibi from his corruption trials in less than 48 hours? At the same time contents detailing a supposed peace deal involving a twp state solution with the “palestinians” surfaces. President Trump’s meddling into Israel’s corrupt judicial system may be cheered by many on the right, but if his interference is coming as a part of a prid quo pro then we may be entering a dark tunnel we cannot easily dig ourselves out from.
Finance Minister Smotrich said it best when he stated the following today:
“Expanding the Abraham Accords is a wonderful thing. Peace treaties from a position of strength, with security potential and economic development for the entire region.
“But if it’s just shiny packaging for an existential threat in the form of dividing the land of Israel, handing over territory to the enemy, and establishing a Palestinian terror state twenty times the size of Gaza in an area that geographically and topographically dominates most of the land of Israel — then no, thank you.”
Is Trump pushing for Bibi’s trials to be cancelled as a kind gesture? Nothing Trump does is for free – he is transactional at his core. Up until now the accusations against Bibi have been hollow, but Trump claiming he was going to save Bibi is the sort of interference meant to elicit a result.
We won the war in 1967 in miraculous fashion, but lost the peace. In 2025 we won again, however we have yet to lose the peace. President Trump may claim he is Israel’s best friend, but by not letting us finish off our enemies and using Bibi’s cases to ensure some sort of regional deal, his friendship is getting shakier by the day.
