For the last few decades, Iran has largely attacked Israel through it’s various proxies on the north and southwest borders of Israel. The Hizbullah in Lebanon and the Hamas in Gaza are two terrorist organizations that are largely funded by Iran and the West. That is how they continue to be relevant no matter how hard they are hit. They just rearm and come back for another few rounds of fighting at a later date.
The threat of a coordinated multi-front war on Israel’s borders has long been one of the greatest fears of Israel’s Defense Ministry. Even before the State of Israel was established, the Arab countries living around and inside the Land of Israel threatened that they would all attack Israel if it declared itself a State. That is precisely what happened. Six Arab countries all fought against the fledgling State of Israel. Miraculously, though with great cost, the State of Israel was established following an exhausting war that lasted more than a year and a half.
In 1967, less than 20 years later, Israel weathered another 3 country blockade and war on it’s borders. Egypt to the south, Syria, to the northeast, and Jordan to the east, all signed a pact that they would fight Israel together. They were all routed by the Israeli Army that had just come of age and surprised even the greatest skeptics.
Six years later, Israel fought yet another two front war against Egypt and Syria. This time, Israel was caught off-guard and paid the price dearly. But, within one week, the Israeli Army turned the tide and succeeded in pushing back the Arab Armies deep into their own territory. Israeli tanks were rolling towards Cairo and Damascus when the Arabs cried uncle. It was a stunning victory following a surprising loss of the first few battles.
The Israeli population understands well that a coordinated attack could spell disaster if it is not sufficiently prepared. That is one of the reasons why Israel almost always elects Prime Ministers with strong military backgrounds. There is nothing more important to Israeli citizens than the security of the State of Israel. Israel must and will always stay on guard.
