If someone would come up with a magical weapon that could knock out the entire leadership of an enemy, without risking the lives of any soldiers, and without any citizens being hurt in the process, that would be called the stuff of fictional novels. But that is actually what the secret soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces pulled off in Lebanon against the Hizbullah.
Perhaps one of the most impressive parts of the beeper operation is that the effects of the operation will linger on for decades. Wounded Hizbullah members have permanent blemishes that will label them for life as being the cause of the destruction in Southern Lebanon. Better than killing the entire leadership, these terrorists have been decapitated, disabled, and humiliated and turned into walking monuments of defeated terrorists. This operation took many years to plan and implement, including building fictitious companies in Europe. It almost backfired. But it displayed how hi-tech prowess combined with brilliant planning and guts can create a total game changer.
Israel’s north and the rest of Israel is safe due to this operation, more than any other single attack. All those who criticize Israel’s Secret Service for the failure on Oct. 7th must admit that the beeper operation was the polar opposite – an excellent example of what Israel’s clandestine operations should be about – penetrating, surprising, and defeating the enemy.
