Moving to a country without knowing the language is challenging. It is not an easy decision for families to pick up and move everything to a different country. Even if it is the right decision and is ultimately worth the struggle, that doesn’t take away from the challenges that come along with it. Some of the challenges are similar for adults and children, and some are completely different. Although the language barrier can be hard for adults as well, it can be more challenging for a child in a classroom. Children go to school and have to understand their teachers. They have to interact with friends. And when these children who were not born in Israel speak a completely different language than those around them, it can be daunting.
Some children pick up the new language faster than others. But every child has to experience the feeling of not understanding for at least a little bit if they do not know much Hebrew coming into Israel.
The hope is that in the end, it will all be worth it. All the challenges will be worth it. All the struggle. Living in G-d’s land is not always an easy thing. But how can people turn down the opportunity to live in G-d’s land and take center stage in Jewish history?
