The 1967 Six Day War
There are many incredible moments in Jewish history. There were many times where we thought we would be destroyed, and G-d performed the most unbelievable miracles for the Jewish nation—His nation. The 1967 Six Day War was one of those times where it was impossible not to see the hand of G-d. Our enemies were once again out to destroy us. Not only did they not succeed, but we even regained control of the old city of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. From 1948 until Israel regained control in 1967, the Jewish people could not step foot near the Western Wall or Temple Mount.
Jewish history in the land of Israel did not start in 1948. Nor did it start 100 years before that, or 100 years before that. G-d gave the land of Israel to the Jewish people thousands of years ago. And Jerusalem has been the capital of the holy land for thousands of years. Returning to the old city was something magical. You can feel a drop of that watching this footage. It’s moving and emotional.
Imagine what those soldiers felt. Imagine the spiritual burst of pride. Think about their gratitude to G-d for their remarkable success. We still celebrate Jerusalem Day decades later with a joy that cannot be contained. We praise G-d with special Psalms. We sing and dance. And we pray that one day soon, the final Temple will be rebuilt in the very same spot that the previous Temples once stood long ago.
