Special Olympic Games

The special Olympic games are an international sporting event for athletes with intellectual disabilities. The first games were held in Chicago in 1968. The goal is to showcase the skills and accomplishments of people with intellectual disabilities on a global stage. Through media coverage, the achievements of these athletes, children, and adults are made known to millions of people around the world.

The special Olympic logo is based on a sculpture called Joy and Happiness to all of the Children around the World. Which was a gift to SUNY Brockport when they hosted the Special Olympics in 1979. The logo has gone through many changes over time. The logo is a symbol of growth, confidence and joy among children and adults who have disabilities. In 2018, the eternal flame of hope was made as a statue. The flame of hope is the name given to the torch that is carried to and lit at the special Olympics.
