Moldova, situated to Ukraine’s south, claims it has promises from Putin that its territorial integrity will be respected. Recent comments by a Russian general should give the tiny nation a reason to think otherwise.

General Rustov Minnekeav, a high ranking Russian general, recently said the following: “One of the tasks of the Russian army is to establish full control over the Donbas and southern Ukraine. This will provide a land corridor to the Crimea, as well as influence the vital objects of the Ukrainian economy.” The general added the following, “Control over the south of Ukraine is another way out to Transnistria, where there are also facts of oppression of the Russian-speaking population.”

Those western politicians who insist the Ukraine conflict is ending soon, have missed what is going on. The goals of Russia in the conflict are not merely to take over part of the Ukraine , but rather to maximize the strategic depth of Southern Ukraine in order to create a buffer between NATO and Russia.

With the Donbas beginning to fall into Russian hands, this outcome appears more and more likely.
