The Houthis took a number of workers who are connected to the US as hostages, as well as US property. The Iranian backed group has been fighting to take over the entire country of Yemen. All of this is an outgrowth of the US retreat from Afghanistan. Since then, the US has been on retreat.
Yemen has been caught in a bloody civil war between the Iranian backed Houthis and the official government that is backed by Saudi Arabia and the USA . The war has direct ramifications on shipping through the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, which Iran is looking to control.
With nuclear talks set to start at the end of the month, the Biden administration appears weak and susceptible to blackmail. Of course that is the real purpose behind Iran’s current assault.
