WhatsappThe answer despite some headlines is no. Biden clearly made his support for “palestine” known at the UN General Assembly. The only caveat was that it is still a long way off.
Biden said the following: “I continue to believe that a two-state solution is the best way to ensure Israel’s future as a Jewish democratic state, living in peace alongside a viable, sovereign and democratic Palestinian state.”
Then added: “We’re a long way from that goal at this moment but we should never allow ourselves to give up on the possibility of progress.”
What is he trying to do?
It appears the president is trying to check both boxes. The first for those who are still clinging to a delusional two-state paradigm and yet Biden himself acknowledging that this reality is very far off. The latter statement is key. He can always say there is a process thus placating the left and yet the process has no end and thus never really boxes his administration into the failed machinations of previous presidents.
It may not be perfect, but the combination essentially helps Israel continued its slow growth policy in the larger “settlement” blocks. The argument will be in what the US administration considers “isolated settlements.” This will be the real test of Biden’s statement at the UN.
