Amazon Smile Program partnership “uniquely detrimental and even dangerous to the Jewish community”

On December 26, 2022 the Gateway Pundit reported “

Amazon Smile sounds like such a cheerful program!  Customers can sign up for the program to have 0.5% of their purchase donated to a charity.

“Charities go through an application process to be accepted.  But many Christian charities have nothing to smile about after learning that they need not apply.

“Amazon uses hate group Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to ‘vet’ whether an organization is allowed to participate in the charity program…”

Jewish  voices are being targeted by the SPLC as well. The Heritage Foundation reported “Prominent Jewish rabbis—including leaders in the Rabbinical Alliance of America and Young Israel—are urging Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to eject the Southern Poverty Law Center from the Amazon Smile program.

“The Southern Poverty Law Center ostensibly strives to expose hate groups. It rightly identifies numerous groups, such as the KKK and the Nation of Islam, as hateful, but it also leverages its credibility to wrongly apply that label to others.  It targets groups engaged in countering ideological extremism, which deprives itself and others of valuable allies in the fight against white supremacy, anti-Semitism, and radical Islamism.  For that reason, a chorus of Jewish leaders are decrying the Southern Poverty Law Center as “uniquely detrimental and even dangerous to the Jewish community.”

“Defamation is nothing new to the organization. In 2018, it paid $3.4 million and issued a public apology for calling Maajid Nawaz, executive director of the Quilliam Foundation, an “anti-Muslim extremist.” Nawaz is himself a Muslim who has devoted his life to fighting Islamism, white supremacy, and neo-Nazism. How shameful that the organization nearly derailed his worthy mission to eliminate such hate.

“In the same publication, it called Daniel Pipes of the Middle East Policy Forum—one of the most reputable opponents of anti-Semitism—“anti-Muslim.”

“Pipes warned that the Southern Poverty Law Center has strayed far from its mission of defeating racism.

“The SPLC has turned into a left-wing hatchet group, using its accumulated prestige to go after legitimate organizations and individuals. Along the way, ironically, SPLC itself acquired some of the reprehensible characteristics it was created to fight. The result is a hugely rich institution with a formidable reputation lacking a raison d’etre or even a moral conscience. It has become a parody of itself.”

“Its inclusion in the Amazon Smile program arms the organization with funds to continue its defamatory endeavors. The partnership fools an unsuspecting public into thinking that the Southern Poverty Law Center is a mainstream charity. An unwarranted “hate group” label from the group poisons the public to the important message of the targeted organizations and dries up their financial support.  The Amazon Smile partnership only invites those dangerous consequences and gives the Southern Poverty Law Center a patina of respectability it doesn’t deserve. Amazon should sever those ties.”

The Family Research Council reported “The foremost group solely focused on tracking antisemitism at American institutions of higher learning states that there were over 1,700 antisemitic incidents that have occurred in the past three years (2015-2017).

“But outside large segments of the Jewish community, this grim reality appears to be virtually unknown.

“Within that community, however, an authoritative observer testified before Congress late last year that “[i]n the past several years, Jewish students on certain college campuses—not all, but a large number—have been subjected to unprecedented levels of anti-Jewish sentiment, leading many to feel uncomfortable participating in Jewish campus life or other campus activities whose participants are especially hostile to Jewish students.”

“Most Americans would be mortified to learn that the colleges and universities to which they pay a king’s ransom have become safe havens for an increasingly noticeable anti-Semitism that has produced an environment of bullying, intimidation, and fear for Jewish students and academics.

“This newly minted antisemitism has entwined itself into the fabric of many educational institutions via a predominant multicultural ideology that pronounces Israel to be its enemy.  To add insult to injury for American liberals, many watchdog groups of the Civil Rights era, most notably the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), have turned a blind eye to this emerging Jew-hatred that fashionably casts itself as a critique of the creation of the state of Israel as just another instance of Western imperialism. Accordingly, Israel is derided as a “white,” “colonialist,” “oppressor state” that has imposed its “apartheid regime” in Palestine to suppress the predecessor Arab population residing there.”
