The US destroyer, the USS Carney was attacked today in the Red Sea. Information is still coming in, but most likely the attack was headed up by the Iranian backed Houthis using drones provided by the Iranian regime.

“We’re aware of reports regarding attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available,” the Pentagon says.

Since the start of the Israeli-Hamas war, the Houthis have been increasing attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. Today’s attack was said to start around 10am Yemen time and lasted more than five hours.

The attack marks a significant escalation against maritime traffic as well as being a direct attack against the US Navy in the region. While this is the first direct attack against a US Navy vessel since the Hamas attack on Israel on the 7th of October, US military installations have been under direct attack from Iranian backed Shiite groups in Iraq and Syria since Israel invaded the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the Hamas pogrom.
