October 7th served as a terrible wake-up call for all of the Jewish people in Israel and abroad. The Holocaust as aspiration is alive and well in and around the Land of Israel. But no less than the shock of October 7th was the shock that so many in the world have experienced with the widespread support that has been openly expressed by anti-Israel demonstrators all across the globe.

Despite the organized nature of so many of the anti-Israel demonstrations on college campuses, there were many hundreds who joined in a spontaneous fashion due to their long held anti-Israel sentiments. It was one thing to be a supporter of what seems like a humanitarian issue, namely, the right of so-called “palestinians” to self-determination. After all, that is a basic right of all making, to a free and democratic society.

But from October 7th and onward, it became clear that all of the anti-Israel sentiment had nothing to do with support of rights of Arabs. It had to do with support of one thing – killing Jews. The sad reality hit the Jewish community at large and caring people all over the world like a ton of bricks. There are tens of millions of people in the world who want to kill Jews. They want to kill Jewish babies, kidnap their grandmothers, and rape their women. This troubling thought has caused tremendous unrest among many people – as it should.

There is one critical thing that must be done, more than anything else. Israel must grow from being a small country with less than 10 million Jews, that is a strong economic powerhouse with a powerful yet small standing army. Israel must become a much larger country with 15 million Jews and a large standing army that will pummel anyone who dares attack it.

AI and other technological innovations may continue to help power Israel’s economic standing in the world. But the most important basic lesson of October 7th is that nothing will ever replace a large standing army. America and China understand this well. Russia is fighting now, partially due to the fact that their population is shrinking rapidly, and this may be their last chance to have a large standing army.
