Prime Minister Netanyahu is indeed in a tough spot, but he is artfully navigating the vicissitudes of dealing with an unpredicatable President like Donald Trump. Bibi is not confrontational unless absolutely necessary and even when he has to confront President Trump, he does it in such manner that it is clear to President Trump that Netanyahu’s hand is forced by domestic pressure.
It is actually both President Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu who are under enormous pressure due to the elections that will be held in both countries. Netanyahu looks like he is the frontrunner to win yet another election and retain power. But this Israeli election will probably bring more surprises than most as it is the first election since October 7th, 2023. There are probably hundreds of thousands of Israelis who will be open to voting for a new alternative – especially if a party appears to be the party of bravery with heroes who’s leadership inspires hope in a brighter future.
Netanyahu understands this well and therefore cannot afford to appear weak in confronting the Hizbullah, the one clear and present threat to the security of the State of Israel. Netanyahu knows that the election winners will be whichever parties convince the electorate that their security is most guaranteed under their leadership.
Donald Trump is in a more complicated situation. He has less control over whether or not the Republicans will hold onto the House and Senate. But he knows that if he loses them both, the Democrates will work on impeaching him and threatening him with endless lawfare cases that will saddle his ability to lead. They will make his life hell. Moreover, he may prefer to parachute out of power before 2028 in return for a pardon from JD Vance in order to not have to deal with lawfare in 2029 in case the Democrats decide to hound him legally at the end of his term.
Therefore it is so critical for President Trump to do whatever he can that will assist him across the board in all of the elections – stabilize the growth of the economy, cut the price of gas by 20-30%, and end the war in Iran. He knows that the net result of all of this will be perhaps that the Republicans will not lose or at least barely lose the midterms. So, President Trump is desperate to end the war with Iran.
Netanyahu understands Trump. Trump understands Netanyahu. But they each are focused on placating their electorates and winning the upcoming elections. The interests of the two countries on confronting Hizbullah – and specifically calming the waters in and around Iran – are not aligned in the short term. Things will probably heat up between the two leaders a few more times before the elections in both countries. It is a truly fascinating time with two historic leaders who are staking out their red lines with dealing with each other.
