Joy Reid is criticized in this Fox News segment as being a ” cup is half empty” person who constantly looks at the negative side of American history and not the positive side. That is very generous of the Fox News reporter and contributor. The truth is that Joy Reid is no more than 1% correct on her history, and often she is 100% wrong.
Thanksgiving is a meaningful holiday for so many and has been for centuries – for very good reason. It’s really very simple. America is good. Yes – it’s that simple. The United States of America, like any other country is obviously not perfect. No country can be. But it sure has withstood the test of time and continues to improve from it’s inception – from the perceptive of decades and centuries.
The Founding Fathers of the United States of America were not just brilliant. They were also good people. But the Joy Reids of the world will argue – “But they were slave owners?” Even George Washington did not get rid of slavery?” These arguments sound so convincing today. Do they have merit? Very little.
These arguments are as anachronistic as arguing, “Why didn’t George Washington allow women to vote?” or ” Why didn’t George Washington support the establishment of the State of Israel back in 1776?” The answer is very simple. None of these matters were relevant – AT THAT TIME.
There were two overarching issues that were the central issues of the Founding Fathers – attaining freedom and establishing a workable union of different States with different norms. Female suffrage was simply not a high priority in 1776 even if it was wrong that women only began to vote in the 20th century in the United States. Most women probably would have agreed with that in 1776. The State of Israel was never even discussed in the 18th century by anyone who wasn’t a wacky radical. Slavery though was indeed an issue and it was discussed. But plain and simple, there was no majority to deal with it because of the norms in the south of the United States where slaves were the key to economic prosperity. The issue was kicked down the road and continued to be a hot potato till the Civil War.
It is a testament to how wonderful the United States is that a Civil War, the bloodiest war in the history of the United States, was fought over the ethical issue of freedom and slavery. Instead of recognizing this, idiots – there is no other word for them, deface statues of Lincoln and the Founding Fathers in order to eradicate the symbols of the United States of America. They should be given hefty fines and a mandatory education in a conservative institution for doing this.
Thanksgiving is a wonderful concept of the United States of America. And it is also a core Jewish concept too.
