Ilhan Omar
Ilhan Omar, serves in Congress for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis. Omar is the first Somali American to sit in the US House of Representatives. Omar is the first minority woman from Minnesota to serve in Congress and one of the first two Muslim women to be serving in Congress.
Omar’s comments about Israel and the Jews have made her Jewish constituents concerned over their future in the State. Omar has been very critical of the Israeli government and she opposed the law restricting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement.
Omar’s Comments:
In 2012 she writes “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.”
In February 2019 she tweeted “It’s all about the Benjamins baby” in reference to American politicians support towards Israel.
Again, in February 2019, she said: “I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is OK for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country.” It is unfair to question the loyalty of politicians and the loyalty of Jews all over America.
In April 2019, she said “Stephen Miller is a white nationalist.” This was part of her comments on the Department of Homeland Security and led to a backlash as Miller is Jewish. White nationalism believes that the white people are a race and seek to maintain white national identity.
Many Jewish and Muslim leaders from Minnesota have expressed continues concern over Omar’s comments. The question will be what will happen in the next election in 2020? Will they re-elect Ilhan Omar or will they choose someone else to represent them in Congress and someone who can watch their words.
The Democratic Party
The Democratic Party has said they are an ally of Israel and have always been committed to the peace process. However, no one has stopped Ilhan Omar’s comments towards Israel or towards the Jewish People.
United States House Representative Max Rose, a Jewish Democrat in his first term in Congress has apologized to his constituents in Staten Island. He apologized for ‘not protecting them’ against Ilhan Omar’s comments.

The Democrats have done nothing, and they need to condemn her comments. They need to make sure she does not abuse her power of being a Congresswoman. The Democratic Party needs to make sure this does not happen again!
