On Sunday, Canada, Australia, and Britain officially recognized a Palestinian state, marking a significant shift in G7 foreign policy. London’s announcement is its first of this kind, aligning with a growing trend among Western nations in recent months.
In Jerusalem, officials expressed concern, cautioning that this unilateral move violates existing agreements, potentially undermining political dialogue and bolstering Palestinian international demands. Meanwhile, some in Israel are advocating for reciprocal measures, including the application of Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria in response.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer justified the decision by saying: “In the face of the growing horror in the Middle East, we are working to preserve the possibility of peace and a two-state solution.” Britain is the third country in the G7 group to join the move after Canada and Australia.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney claimed that “the Israeli government is systematically working to prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state. We can no longer wait for an agreement that is not in sight.”
In New York, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced at the UN General Assembly that the recognition of a Palestinian state is part of a coordinated international effort with Canada and Britain. He stated that Australia would pursue establishing an embassy and full diplomatic relations, contingent on reforms within the Palestinian Authority.
Netanyahu commented at the beginning of the government meeting: “On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, I will go to the UN General Assembly, and immediately afterwards I will meet with our friend President Trump. At the UN, I will present the truth. This is Israel’s truth, but it is the objective truth in our just struggle against the forces of evil, and our vision for true peace – peace through strength.”
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir proposed immediate countermeasures: “The recognition by the countries of Britain, Canada, and Australia as a ‘Palestinian’ state, as a reward for the murderers of the Nuhbah, requires immediate countermeasures: the immediate imposition of sovereignty in Judea and Samaria and the complete crushing of the ‘Palestinian’ Authority.”
