What do David Ben-Gurion and Golda Meir have to say about the use of the word “Palestinians?” Golda Meir explains it better than anyone. The East of the Jordan River and the West of the Jordan River were both referred to as geographical areas called Palestine. But there was never a separate entity called “Palestinians.” That is merely a fiction that was created in order to justify another fiction called growing nationhood.
When talking to Arabs on the street in Israel, they rarely call themselves “Palestinians.” They care about their nationality. But they care about religious things – such as Al Aqsa. That they do care about, and that is indeed a major problem.
But let’s not fool ourselves into thinking that this is about the rights of a persecuted minority. It is about religion. And too many Arabs are not happy with Jews that are alive anywhere in the world – let alone in the Middle East.
