There may have been times that the world wondered if G-d’s eternal promise to Abraham still held true. But Abraham never questioned it.
The Children of Abraham Are Still Here
The story of the Jewish people is fascinating. Through all the struggles, the Jewish people remain strong. Their chain of faith and belief in G-d from the times of Abraham has remained unbroken. Yes, there are challenges and some of the children of Israel struggle with faith more than others. But the Jewish nation has kept its religion and traditions for thousands of years.
And even when people thought the Jewish people would be forgotten and die out, they only came back stronger.
This song is a beautiful way to describe the promise that G-d made to Abraham thousands of years ago. When Abraham was commanded to sacrifice his only son Isaac (which he was then told to hold his hand back for it was just a test), he still believed in G-d’s promise that G-d would make him into a great nation. He didn’t question it.
The Lyrics
You’ve waited all this while
Still without a child
Yet your faith in me remains strong.
You’ve really done your best
Passed every test
Never questioning anything at all.
So this I promise you
If you promise to stay true
Your children will be like the stars in the sky
This vast universe before your very eyes
Endless in number and endless in size
You couldn’t count ’em if you tried
I promise you tonight.
Now that I’ve granted you a son
There’s one more thing to be done so
Listen, please.
Take the one you love
Sacrifice him up above
As offering to me.
So this I promise you
If you promise to stay true.
Your children will be like the stars in the sky
This vast universe before your very eyes
Endless in number and endless in size
You couldn’t count em if you tried.
הַבֶּט־נָ֣א הַשָּׁמַ֔יְמָה וּסְפֹר֙ הַכּ֣וֹכָבִ֔ים
Abraham Abraham
Please do not move your hand
You’ve proven yourself loyal to me
Your name will carry on
Your nation will grow strong
A promise kept throughout history.
So this I promise you
If you promise to stay true.
