Israel’s independence was one of the most historic moments in Jewish history. You have to hear the original reading of the declaration!
Declaring Israel’s Independence
What a moment! It was 2,000 years in the making. Jews were waiting to come home, and many already did even before Israel’s independence was officially declared.
For thousands of years, the Jewish people never stopped yearning for their homeland. They prayed and hoped to return to Israel every since they were exiled. Despite all the hardship and oppression that Jews have endured for centuries, they never stopped yearning to go home. Nation after nation tried to break the Jewish people spiritually and physically, but none succeeded. And a nation that cannot be broken was bound to return home; it was just a matter of time.
And at this moment, as David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, read the declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel, it became more real. It was the moment that the dream of 2,000 years was coming into fruition. The Jewish people were done being controlled by other nations. It was time for sovereignty.
It’s true – the final redemption is not yet here. We still have to pray to G-d as well as improve ourselves and the world before the Messiah can come. But we have definitely reached the beginning stages of the redemption. The flower has started to bud even if it has not yet fully blossomed. And on Israel’s 73rd Independence Day this year, that is something to continuously be thankful for.
