Environmental Protection Minister Gila Gamliel said “that investigations from her ministry traced the recent oil spill off of Israel’s Mediterranean coast back to Iran.”

Israeli authorities have described the oil spill as one of Israel’s worst ecological disasters. The oil was initially traced back to an unregistered Libyan tanker. “The ship had called on an Iranian port before approaching the Israeli coast and, turning off its tracking transponder, deposited its cargo of crude oil into the surf,” Gamliel said.

The oil spill sent thick tar onto the 120km worth of Israeli beaches. The spill also reached the Tyre Coast Nature Reserve  in Lebanon.

Israel is committing $14 million for the clean up effort.
