If you live in Israel, you most likely know someone who was killed in one of Israel’s many wars and terrorist attacks. If you don’t know someone directly, you definitely know someone who does. We are all connected. And it’s a painful day. But as Jews, we remember. We take our time to mourn our loved ones and our larger Jewish family. We remember those who gave their lives so that we can live ours in our ancient, ancestral homeland.
Sometimes, we think about those who were killed, but we don’t think about the fact that each one was an entire world and left an entire world behind. Their parents, their siblings, their spouses, their children. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends. Some were teachers and had students. The way this video was made really drives home the reality that each one left so many loved ones behind. And it’s so heartbreaking to truly think about.
Let’s pray that by next Yom Hazikaron, there will be no more holy Jews to mourn over. Let’s pray that the final redemption will have come by then, and instead of mourning, we can all just fully celebrate. The redemption is getting closer and closer. May we merit to see it speedily in our days.
